PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

This position is designed to act as a highly skilled technology consultant in the area of Cloud Infrastructure Services and Cloud Platforms with a focus on Operating Systems. The individual will be part of a global team responsible for the installation, customization and maintenance of enterprise Linux/Unix systems supporting mission critical infrastructure and SAP Clouds, including physical and virtual servers. There will be close collaboration with all related SAP IT teams as well as with our customers.

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS

  • Perform advanced-level operating system support for Linux/Unix infrastructure systems; coordinate support and life-cycle activities with managed service providers

  • Solid understanding of Linux/Unix based operating systems including: paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and device drivers, filesystem concepts, clustering, logical partitions

  • Knowledge of common server-class hardware, including blades and traditional server chassis, RAID, connectivity to enterprise storage such as SAN and NAS

  • Build, maintain and publish operating system images/templates and standards, maintain operating system image and patch repositories, release calendars

  • Follow internal IT processes including incident/problem management, change management and release/deployment management

  • Work closely with colleagues in other infrastructure teams: Compute, Network, Storage, and Data Center

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Required skills:

  • College degree or combination of equivalent training and experience

  • 5 years practical experience with Linux, specifically SUSE and Redhat Enterprise

  • 5 years technical experience in the area of general data center infrastructure (storage, networking, compute, and core software)

  • In-depth knowledge of Linux operating systems

  • High motivation and interest to embrace new technologies and learn new skills

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to clearly express ideas in written and verbal form

Preferred skills:

  • Solaris operating system

  • Knowledge of cloud and virtualization technologies
